Jiraiya teaches her what he knows of the beginning-levels of Tsunade's taijutsu skills (so slowly she starts getting physically stronger much earlier than in canon, including developing the Cherry Blossom Impact), and her new sensei recommends she start learning how to better exploit those techniques that she IS currently capable of, directing her to brainstorm with Naruto using his prankster instincts to help. NARUTO SAMEHADA FANFICTION CHUNIN EXAMS HOW TO By the time of the chuunin exam tournament, her chakra levels have built up enough so that she she can start effectively using all that genjutsu and medical ninjutsu she'd been taught, and her taijutsu is getting reasonably good. She's also earning a reputation for herself as "Sakura of the Kawarimi" (similar to how Uchiha Shisui earned the title Shisui of the Body Flicker), utilizing the basic Academy technique in ways ninja had never thought of (or thought possible) before. It's a slow burn to that point (and Naruto has a similar "better than before but still slow burn" development arc that. escalates quickly during the month of training between the prelims and the Stage III tournament), but she has some moments to shine along the way. It's unfinished, and I no longer have the time to finish it as originally planned, but there are enough "cut and disconnected scenes" that I was in the process of piecing together an ending that could be managed without devoting TOO much time to a non-paying writing project - not quite the ending I wanted, and a some of the sub-plots end without resolution, but one that I felt would at least be coherent with only minor tweaks and alterations. I've read others with her taking her training seriously in Part I, but it's been a while - I'd have to dig to find you titles - and I don't recall many of them going very far.
There's a relevant common theme for some Part-I-set NaruSaku and Different Team Seven fanfics, including my aforementioned unposted fanfic (which is both) - namely, the concept that if Sakura isn't being constantly distracted by Sasuke's presence in Part I, she will start taking herself and her career seriously.
